NORTH CALDWELL, NJ — What are students in the North Caldwell Public School District reading this summer?

School administrators recently posted the 2017 summer reading list for incoming fourth, fifth and sixth graders on the district website. Here are some of the books that they’re reading this summer.

4TH GRADE

  • Who Was Thomas Alva Edison? by Margaret Frith - This book overviews the life of one of the most famous “New Jerseyans,” Thomas Edison. After reading, you can visit his laboratory and home in nearby West Orange.
  • The Lemonade War by Jacqueline Davies - Evan and his younger sister, Jesse, react very differently to the news that they will be in the same class for fourth grade and as the end of summer approaches, they battle it out through lemonade stands, each trying to be the first to earn 100 dollars. Includes mathematical calculations and tips for running a successful lemonade stand.

5TH GRADE

  • The Pinballs by Betsy Byars - From Newbery-winning author Betsy Byers comes a story about three foster kids who learn what it takes to make a family.
  • The Mostly True Adventures of Homer P. Figg by Rodman Philbrick - Twelve-year-old orphan Homer runs away from Pine Swamp, Maine, to find his older brother, Harold, who has been sold into the Union Army.

6TH GRADE
