4th Of July Fireworks Canceled In Chatham In Storm's Wake

Widespread power outages and downed trees and wires after Friday's storm were creating an extensive cleanup.

CHATHAM, NJ — Chatham officials have canceled Saturday's 4th of July celebration and fireworks display as the borough works to clean up damage from Friday night's severe storms.

"Due to downed wires, hazardous roadway conditions, and the potential for inclement weather this afternoon, the Fourth of July Parade, Flag Raising and Fireworks Display have been canceled," borough officials said.

More than 530 homes and businesses remained without power as of noon, according to Jersey Central Power & Light.

Chatham officials said there had been widespread property damage and downed trees from the storm, which packed wind gusts up to 60 mph, according to the National Weather Service.

"Emergency services, Public Works, and Borough officials are mobilized and responding. Use extreme caution around downed wires. Treat all wires as live. Do not touch, drive over, or walk near downed power lines. Do not move or trim limbs entangled with wires, as they may be energized," officials said.
