The Art League of the Chathams warmly invites the community to the opening reception of "Lights and Shadows: A Plein Air Group Show" on Sunday, September 13, 2026, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Lundt-Glover Gallery in the Chatham Township Municipal Building. Admission is free and open to the public, and refreshments will be served.

The exhibition will feature plein air paintings by members of the Art League of the Chathams and other local artists.

Plein air is the practice of painting outdoors, directly from nature and in natural light. The technique is closely associated with the celebrated French Impressionists, who sought to capture the changing effects of sunlight, atmosphere, color, and shadow.

Through the theme "Lights and Shadows," participating artists explore how natural light transforms landscapes, architecture, and familiar community settings. The group exhibition celebrates the spontaneity of painting outdoors and the individual ways artists interpret the world around them.

The Art League is also developing a Youth League through its Family Membership program, encouraging children and families to participate in exhibitions and creative activities. As part of its commitment to emerging artists, the organization proudly offers the annual $1,000 Rosemary Howlett Scholarship to a Chatham High School senior pursuing a career in the arts.

Community members interested in joining the Art League, exhibiting their artwork, supporting its youth programming, or contributing to the nonprofit are encouraged to connect with the organization.

For inquiries, please contact Khaya Peluso or Celeste Fondaco through the Art League's contact form.

Join us as we celebrate our community and the beauty of painting outdoors through the ever-changing relationship between light and shadow.
