New adult education courses offered at the Library of The Chathams

The Library of The Chathams is continuing its popular adult education series. We are offering two courses in May.

Monsters, Gangsters, and the Great Depression in Film

May 9, 16, 23 & 30 at 11 am

Drew University Associate Professor of History Wyatt Evans will present this four-part series of lectures. Using classic gangster and monster films from the 1930s, this course will include the historical realities that influenced modern gangster and monster films; the place of gangster and monster films in the history of film, including the issues of censorship and the movie production code; gangster and monster films as specific genres, their relationship to other genres of the period including film noire, and the depictions of race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, urbanism and morality. Lastly, we will discuss how and why these two genres remain influential in the present.

The Global Cold War

May 9, 16, 23 & 30 at 1 pm

Dr. James M. Carter, Department Chair of History at Drew University, will present this four-part series of lectures. The Cold War originated immediately following World War II and soon enveloped the globe. What began as a set of tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union over Germany and Eastern Europe soon spread around the entire globe. Within a couple of years after World War II, the United States and the Soviet Union were jockeying for position, influence, and control in places across the modern Middle East, East Asia, and even Latin America.

A $40 fee for each course payable to Friends of the Library of The Chathams is required by May 1. You may register in person or by calling the library at 973-635-0603.
