Charley's Aunt a Local Staple for More than Burgers

Famed for burgers, the Chatham landmark also offers salads, entrees and sandwiches.

Chatham residents know on South Passaic Avenue the way they know the gazebo in Reasoner Park or the 9-11 Memorial in Memorial Park. The pub and restaurant is part of the landscape, part of the town's identity. And with a menu that can accommodate the pickiest of eaters, this friendly restaurant has much to offer besides its prime location.

While it's tempting to stick to fried appetizers at a bar, such as calimari, mozzarella carrozza (with house anchovy sauce as an option instead of the traditional marinara sauce) or chicken fingers, Charley's Aunt also has healthier options such as grilled portobello mushrooms served with red peppers and goat cheese ($10.95).

Salads are not always the most exciting thing on a menu, but the Charley's Harvest Salad ($11.95) is a local favorite. Served with apples, dried canberries and apple cider vinaigrette, this autumn-inspired salad is a delicious option any time of year.

Sandwiches ($6.25 to $13.95) can be served on a variety of bread options, including wraps for the carb-conscious individual, and the creative chefs can restyle melts and meat loaf into open-faced or wrap sandwiches. Pasta options ($11.95 to $14.95) vary from penne pasta primavera to cheese ravioli with prosciutto, peas and pink vodka cream sauce, something for the most traditional or the most adventurous eater. Entrees, too, offer various combinations of fish and sauces, including tilapia or salmon francese ($15.95) and scallops with portobello mushrooms in sherry wine sauce ($16.95).

What most locals know Charley's Aunt for, though, are their burgers. Charley's famous steakburger (starting at $8, more for toppings) is a staple, but there is also the pizza burger, the Mexican or Tex Mex burger, a turkey burger or portobello mushroom burger ($8.95 to $10.95).
