CHATHAM, NJ - The end of 2019 saw Florham Park's Matthew Castellano ascend to Eagle Scout Rank at Chatham Borough Troop 8’s Court of Honor at Ogden Memorial Presbyterian Church in Chatham.

Castellano began his Scouting career in Den 1 of Cub Scout Pack 6, crossing over to Troop 8 in February 2013 after earning the Arrow of Light. He became one of the youngest Life Scouts at Troop 8, having earned the rank at the age of 13 in December 2015. He completed his Board of Review for the Eagle rank on August 19th. He also earned 36 merit badges – enough to qualify him to receive Bronze, Gold and Silver Eagle Palms. Fewer than 1 percent of Scouts attain this achievement.

Castellano’s Eagle project was to create and install bird sanctuaries at Kelley’s Pond and Shepard Kollock Park in Chatham Borough for use by teachers, students, and the Chatham community. Over three weekends, he assembled teams comprised of classmates and Scouts to construct, mount, and install birdhouses. The sanctuaries were conceived to attract Eastern Bluebirds and Black-capped Chickadees, and the Borough is quite happy with the results.

Apart from scouting, Castellano has been a very active senior at the Delbarton School in Morris Township. He is a member of the Campus Ministry Team, the Senior Editor of the Archway, a Student Ambassador, a Delbarton Arts Council Board member, and plays the trumpet in the wind ensemble band.
