Chatham Boys' Lacrosse Wins Behind Strong Team Effort

Team's offense gets back on track in 14-2 win.

The Chatham boys' lacrosse team continued its early season success on Saturday, defeating the Columbia Cougars decisively by a final score of 14-2 at Cougar Field. The team had hoped to regain its form after an offensively stagnant game yesterday against Bernards High School, and it did.

The game's first few minutes were a defensive struggle for both teams, neither of which was giving an inch. The Chatham defense didn't allow much in terms of scoring opportunities to the Columbia offense, a theme that would continue throughout the game.

"We're trying to get them to pressure the ball and play team defense," said Head Coach Anthony Calandra.

The team's players said that tactic was effective.

"Our defense was getting takeovers right away," said senior goaltender Mac Nestler.

When many shots were taken, Nestler was there to stop them immediately. He finished with three saves in the first half, shutting out the Columbia offense before being pulled for rest.

"He's been good all year," said Calandra. "He's a leader back there, the captain of our defense."

Unlike the Cougars' prior victories, the team had more of a team effort in the offensive zone.

Jack Beatty broke a scoreless tie at the game's beginning with a rising shot past the Columbia goaltender. Quinn Frenzel, Kyle Howard-Johnson, Casey Gill, Sean Whiteman, and Kyle McDonough all took part in the scoring for the Cougars, each adding goals of their own.

"Offensively we're allowing things to go earlier," Calandra said. "Wewere too patient yesterday."

Rob Guida produced another six point game with three goals and three assists.

"He's a mix of speed and power," said Calandra.

The team now looks on to Tuesday's game against the West Essex High School Knights at Cougar Field. The team, however, still sees areas where it can get better.

"Our defense can always improve," said Nestler.
