Chatham Library Opens A Chapter On American Democracy

CHATHAM, NJ — Chatham residents can brush up on American history Tuesday without leaving home.

The Library of the Chathams is offering an online conversation with historian and author David O. Stewart at 2 p.m. The educational program will explore his new book, “The Democracy We Must Keep: Why the Ideas That Built America Still Matter.”

For Chatham residents, the program offers an engaging way to explore the democratic principles behind the decisions, debates and elections shaping their community.

Stewart examines nine key documents that influenced the nation’s founding, from Patrick Henry’s calls for liberty to the creation of a government chosen by its people.

The discussion also considers principles that remain part of civic life today, including the belief that “power must be limited,” public officials must answer to citizens and individual rights must receive legal protection.

For Chatham residents, the program offers a timely chance to revisit how the country’s government took shape as the United States marks its 250th anniversary.

The virtual talk is free, but advance registration is required through the library’s online event page.
