CHATHAM, NJ - Families, Girl and Boy Scouts, clubs, youth groups, outdoor enthusiasts descended on Green Village Pond Conservation Area to pick up trash, spread wood chips, spruce up the trail, prune brambles and enjoy a taste of spring as part of the Chatham Township Environmental Commission's 17th annual Open Space workday on April 6.

According to organizers, 35 enthusiastic volunteers spent the morning working on a piece of preserved Chatham Township land clearing and spreading wood chips on the trail to the pond. Chatham High School students in the Key Club, Township residents and their children, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and a family from a Hackensack environmental group lined the trail, clipped brambles away from the footpath and collected 15 bags of trash along with ancient rusted farm equipment and old metal implements.

Sponsors included Chatham Disposal, Inc. which donated collection of the bags of trash, ShopRite of Chatham which donated trash bags, work gloves and supplies, and the Chatham Township Department of Public Works which donated three cubic yards of wood chips and loaned rakes, shovels and wheelbarrows.
