'Controlled Burn' In Parks Could Cloud Morris County

If you see or smell smoke in the area, there is a reason why, but officials say there is no cause for concern.

MORRIS COUNTY, NJ - Residents may see visible smoke and smell burning on Wednesday as the NJ Department of Environmental Protection will be conducting two prescribed burns in Morris County.

The burning will take place in both at Lewis Morris Park and in Basking Ridge at the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge. The burn is being closely monitored by the Forest Service, officials said.

The primary purpose of prescribed burning in New Jersey is to reduce the hazardous accumulations of forest fuels. This aids in the prevention of wildfires, reduces the intensity of the fires, and also provides a foundation for safer, more effective fire suppression and protection operations, according to the NJ Fire Service.
