Councilman: People Who Burned Flag at 9/11 Memorial are 'Scum' (UPDATED)

The flag was discovered during the borough's Fourth of July parade.

UPDATE: 2:17 p.m. Councilman Joseph Marts held a tattered flag above his head during Monday's Borough Council meeting, angered by what had happened around the time of the borough's Fourth of July parade.

"I just think it's a tragedy and an outrage," he said. "For them to do something like this is absolutely despicable."

Marts was referring to an American flag that was burned at the Sept. 11 memorial in Memorial Park. The flag was discovered at 6 a.m. July 4.

He also said broken glass and discarded food was found nearby.

"The people who did it are scum in my book," Marts said.

He continued: "My thoughts are probably shared by all the council members on the dais."

During the meeting, he passed the flag off to borough police Sgt. Brian Gibbons as evidence.

Gibbons said this afternoon there have been no arrests in connection with the matter.

He said police officers have been tasked with making repeated visits to the area "to make sure people aren't tampering with the memorial or leaving rubbish around the area."
