Free Salmon Dinner Oct 8 at Trinity

Alaskan salmon; missions fund-raiser; everyone invited

Fresh salmon flown in from Alaska will be the featured item on the menu at 6:30 pm., Saturday, October 8 at Trinity Covenant Church, 343 E. Cedar St. in Livingston. All are invited.

The event is a “free salmon fundraising dinner.” The salmon is fresh-frozen in Alaska and shipped directly to the church; side dishes and desserts are provided, “pot luck style,” by congregational members.

The salmon is prepared by Dennis Weidler, the general manager of radio station KICY in Alaska. After dinner, Weidler provides an entertaining look at life in Alaska, and tells the story of this remarkable radio station.

KICY provides news, weather, entertainment and inspirational programming across the lonely parts of Alaska and into Russia, and has been a lifeline for people living in the frozen North. (In fact, KICY is the only commercial radio station in the US licensed to broadcast into another country in their language.) It has become an independent source of news, weather, music and entertainment in Siberia.

Several years ago, the station was given FCC permission to broadcast at 50,000 watts 24 hours a day, expanding its potential audience from 40,000 people to 600,000. Most of the annual operating budget comes from churches and individual donations.
