Grenade, Stun Gun Seized in Alleged Drug Bust of Father, Son
Chatham Borough residents accused of running drug operation out of Lum Avenue home.

A military grenade, a stun gun and about 1 pound of marijuana were seized in a bust of a Chatham Borough father-and-son drug operation at a Lum Avenue home that caused the evacuation of the neighborhood over the weekend, said Thursday.
Walter L. Smith, 64, and Zachary T. Smith, 30, were each charged with third-degree manufacturing, distributing or dispensing a CDS; third-degree distribution on or within 1,000 feet of school property; fourth-degree possession of a CDS; fourth-degree possession of a prohibited weapon; possession or distribution of a hypodermic syringe and possession of drug paraphernalia. Zachary Smith was also charged with fourth-degree possession of paraphernalia with intent to distribute.
An investigation led by detectives Joseph Crecca and Daniel Walsh resulted in a search warrant being obtained for the Lum Avenue residence Saturday night at about 8:15 p.m., Chatham Borough Police said.

Approximately 1 pound of suspected marijuana, a stun gun, drug paraphernalia and other evidence "supporting manufacturing and distribution of CDS were seized" at the home, police said.
A grenade was also found during the search that caused the precautionary evacuation of nearby residents, police said. The Morris County Bomb Squad seized the device without incident and testing revealed the device was an M30 military training grenade that did not "contain material capable of causing an explosion," police said.
