Lightning Causes Small Fire in Township Home

Chatham Township Fire Department officials say damage was 'minimal.'

A small fire broke out in a Chatham Township home after lightning struck the roof Thursday morning.

Daniel Roebuck, a lieutenant with the Chatham Township Fire Department, said lightning struck the roof at 2 Geoffrey Ct. at approximately 11:30 a.m. Thursday.

The lightning strike caused a small fire, Roebuck said. The fire was extinguished by 11:50 a.m.

"It was a pretty small fire, about 1-foot square, and it was all limited to that corner of the roof," Roebuck said.

Damage was "minimal," according to Roebuck, consisting mostly of a hole in the roof where the fire was. Firefighters were patching the hole by noon.

Roebuck said the residents, who were not home at the time, will be able to occupy the house without delay.

The Chatham Township Fire Department, Green Village Fire Department, Chatham Township Police and the Chatham Emergency Squad responded to the scene.
