PSE&G Ponies Up $25K To Chatham Township To Replace Trees

The money will also be used for flood mitigation, officials said.

CHATHAM, NJ - PSE&G is ponying up $25,000 to help Chatham Township repair damage done to the landscape in town.

In late 2018 and early 2019 PSE&G conducted massive tree cutting and clearing its’ right of way area through Chatham Township. Many residents complained about not being notified by PSE&G of this work prior to its’ occurring and some residents stated that their properties were impacted because of the soil disturbance in the adjacent easement area, Mayor Tayfun Selen said.

Selen said based on follow-up conversations and meetings with Everton Scott, the PSE&G Representative, and other senior level PSE&G officials, PSE&G has agreed to contribute to Chatham Township the following:

  • A check for $10,000 to be used for the purchase of trees.
  • Labor - $15,000 of PSE&G labor to clean out and stabilize swales and other drainage easements to help reduce flooding concerns.

PSE&G will contribute a combined total of $25,000 to the Township for this project. As soon as the work schedules are finalized, they will be shared with residents

"PSE&G deserves credit for rectifying a mistake that had been made, responding to our concerns and committing to proper early communication with our residents in the future," Selen said. "I am pleased that PSE&G has decided to work with the Township of Chatham to replant trees, restore swales and drainage easements as well as improve their communication efforts with our residents."

Selen said this is an example of how elected officials can obtain a positive outcome from a negative experience.
