Reminder: Chatham Borough Performing Hydrant Flushing This Month

The Borough of Chatham informed residents when hydrant flushing will take place during the month of May.

Chatham Borough announced when the Department of Public Works will be flushing the water mains in the distribution system by opening hydrants this month.

The Department of Public Works Utilities Division said it will be performing borough-wide hydrant flushing, which began on Monday, May 4, through May 29. The department flushes the water each year to help to continue to provide residents with quality water service.

Water mains are flushed by systematically opening hydrants in specific areas around the borough to create increased water flows. Residents may notice decreased water pressure or discolored water when crews are in the area.

Discolored water is both fairly normal during hydrant flushing and harmless. It may occur because sediment in water mains gets stirred up when the flow of water in the mains changes. If residents experience discolored water, simply run the water until it is clear.
