To the Editor:
At a time when Democrats across the country are standing up for democratic values and integrity, it is more important than ever that we choose local leaders who have demonstrated a real and lasting commitment to those principles.
In the June 2 Democratic primary, voters will select two candidates for Chatham Borough Council. Nicholas Eck and Sophia Hull stand apart for their long-standing involvement in the Democratic Party and their consistent record of service to our community. Their commitment is rooted in years of visible work of canvassing, organizing, and showing up for neighbors.

By contrast, there are legitimate concerns about the authenticity and consistency of another candidate who only recently changed party affiliation. This is not about personal criticism, but about accountability and trust. Party affiliation should reflect deeply held values and ongoing participation, not a last-minute strategic decision. Community members who have spent years building our local Democratic infrastructure recognize the difference.
There are also real concerns about commitment to the Democratic process itself. If you watch Borough Council meetings, as I have, you will recognize this candidate from recent months, often aligned with a small group that directs harsh criticism toward our unpaid Council members. It’s clear that the tone can become partisan, and some of the repeated confrontations and group criticism he has participated in (or used as a backdrop) are concerning. Accountability matters, so does how it is exercised.

I spend significant time canvassing and engaging in local Democratic efforts, and I have not seen this candidate actively participating in those spaces. Our local Democratic community has been built through sustained, visible work, something that cannot be replicated overnight.
Sophia Hull and Nick Eck have earned the trust of our community and the endorsements of both the Chatham Borough Democratic Committee and the Morris County Democratic Committee. They represent integrity, consistency, and a genuine commitment to Democratic values.
I urge voters to support the candidates who have already proven their dedication.
Sincerely,
Elisa Hay
