Would-Be Package Thief Stopped By Chatham Dog: Police
The suspected thief also had 85 Xanax pills on him, police said.

CHATHAM, NJ— This would be package thief would have gotten away with it if it wasn't for a meddling dog: Chatham Borough Police were alerted to a suspected package thief after a woman's dog kept barking.
Mark Conwell, Jr, of Chatham, was arrested on Dec. 6 after a borough woman found him on her front porch. Conwell, who was near a package, set off the dogs alerts, who barked for the woman's attention.
Conwell asked the woman if she needed assistance with the package, with she declined. Conwell went onto another porch, taking two packages from their stoop and hiding them under his jacket.

A United States Postal Services worker also saw Conwell, and the mail carrier confronted him.
When police arrived, Conwell and the mail carrier were still talking.

Police found 85 Xanax pills on Conwell during the arrest process. Conwell was charged theft of moveable property, possession of a controlled dangerous substance without a prescription, and intent to distribute.
He is currently being held on $20,000 bail.
