CAMDEN, NJ – One of East Camden's main thoroughfares is in the process of getting a new look.

The $10 million project, which encompasses 27th Street from Marlton to Federal streets and Baird Boulevard, will improve safety and mobility for vehicles and pedestrians; reconstruct roads, curbs and sidewalks; upgrade curb ramps and crosswalks to be more compliant with Americans with Disabilities Act regulations; improve traffic signals and other signage and striping; and plant trees and other streetscape items, officials said.

Resident, stakeholder and community feedback was sought before finalizing the plans for the project, according to Camden County Commissioner Al Dyer.

“We are listening to the concerns of residents and taking the advice of experts to complete both above and below ground reconstruction of 27th Street,” Dyer said in a press release. “Through this project, we will improve underground utilities as well as the roadway for traffic, pedestrians, business and the overall community.”

Funds from various sources, including the New Jersey Infrastructure Bank and the New Jersey Department of Transportation, are covering the project’s cost, officials said.
