CHERRY HILL, NJ — A Cherry Hill man was sentenced on Monday after he sexually abused an inmate while working as a corrections officer in Philadelphia, the U.S. Attorney's Office said.
Michael Jefferson, 43, was sentenced to 360 months in jail and 10 years of supervised release after he pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated sexual abuse, one count of sexual abuse, one count of sexual abuse of a ward, and one count of deprivation of rights under color of law.
In the early morning on July 6, 2024, Jefferson was on duty as a correctional officer at the Federal Detention Center in Philadelphia when he went into the cell of an inmate.
He then forcibly sexually assaulted her and left her injured.
The Attorney's Office said Jefferson's acts willfully deprived her of her right not to be subjected to cruel and unusual punishment under his authority, and in violation of her civil rights.
