14 Kayakers Rescued From River In Wharton State Forest, NJDEP Says

The group included 4 adults and 10 teens; at least 2 teens were evaluated for hypothermia, officials said.

SHAMONG, NJ — Two teens were evaluated for hypothermia after first responders rescued a group of 14 kayakers who got stuck in a portion of the Batsto River on Saturday, state officials said.

The group — four adults and 10 kids who ranged in age from 14 to 17 — had encountered obstructions on the river within the Wharton State Forest and were not able to travel farther along it, said Caryn Shinske, a spokesperson for the state Department of Environmental Protection.

New Jersey State Park Police, the New Jersey Forest Fire Service and local agencies helped the group out of the river, Shinske said.

She did not say how long the group had been stuck when they called for help.

At least two of the teens were evaluated for possible hypothermia because of the rainy conditions, she said. No life-threatening injuries were reported.
