Cancer Center Becomes Only In South Jersey To Offer These Treatment Services

CAMDEN, NJ — South Jersey patients will now be able to receive life-saving treatment closer to home.

MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper is now the only provider of stem cell transplant services in South Jersey, the health system said.

The group earned accreditation from the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT) for its Blood & Marrow Transplant and Cellular Therapy Program.

In order to qualify, the team had to undergo an evaluation of "every aspect of care," including cell collection, processing, storage, and administration.

Operations must adhere to FACT's standards of quality, safety, and patient care.

The accreditation covers autologous stem cell transplants and a number of other advanced cellular therapies.

Stem cell transplants bring new healthy cells in to restore normal blood cell production and replace damaged or diseased bone marrow.

Cellular therapies, like "CAR T-cell," target cancer through the use of engineered immune cells.

The Blood & Marrow Transplant and Cellular Therapy Program treats patients with cancers and blood disorders such as leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, and myelodysplastic syndromes.

It also offers access to other forms of care for melanoma, lung cancer, and head and neck cancers.

Patients with Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial insurance can receive full therapies, including stem cell transplant, CAR T-cell therapy, tumor-infiltrating lymphocyte (TIL) therapy, natural killer cell therapy, and T-cell receptor therapy.
