Man Beaten With Baseball Bat, Shot In South Jersey: Prosecutor

The shooting along Haddonfield Road was after a fight, officials said.

PENNSAUKEN, NJ — A 38-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday after using a baseball bat to beat a man and then shooting him, the Camden County Prosecutor's Office said.

Kalief Armstrong of Philadelphia has been charged with first-degree attempted murder, aggravated assault and weapons charges, the prosecutor's office said.

Pennsauken police were called to Cooper University Hospital about 11:50 p.m. on July 2 after a man who had been shot arrived in a private vehicle, the prosecutor's office said.

The man has not been identified. He was listed in critical but stable condition, according to officials.

Detectives learned the shooting happened about 11:15 p.m. in the 8900 block of Haddonfield Road and that Armstrong beat the man with a baseball bat during a fight before the shooting, the prosecutor's office said.

Armstrong was arrested on Tuesday. In addition to attempted murder he is charged with third-degree aggravated assault, second- and fourth-degree counts of unlawful possession of a weapon, second- and third-degree counts of possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and a second-degree count of certain persons not to possess weapons.

He was taken to the Camden County Correctional Facility to await a detention hearing.
