425-Mile Bike Ride Raises Awareness For Lung Cancer In NJ

CAMDEN, NJ — A five-day, multi-state journey in support of patients with lung cancer ended on Saturday at MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper.

John Matthews, the founder of nonprofit "Ride Hard Breathe Easy," was joined by other riders through New Hampshire, Vermont, New York, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey for a 425-mile bike ride.

Along the route, participants stopped in various communities to talk with supporters, hospital partners, volunteers, and local organizations to raise funds and awareness for the financial barriers that block so many who are sick from receiving care.

Beginning in 2011 after John lost his mother to lung cancer, the rides have raised more than $1.2 million and given direct assistance to more than 2,500 patients and families across the United States.

Facilities like MD Anderson Cancer Center work in partnership with the organization to provide transportation, groceries, utility and housing assistance, wigs, and other resources.

"The impact of Ride Hard Breathe Easy extends far beyond the miles traveled," senior vice president and chief philanthropy officer at The Cooper Foundation Lisa Morina said. "Their commitment to supporting lung cancer patients helps address everyday challenges that can accompany a diagnosis and demonstrates the power of community-driven philanthropy."

Ride Hard Breathe Easy operates under an ever-evolving mission: "How many miles does it take to get people talking about lung cancer? 14,000 and counting."
