Broadcaster Dick Sheeran Discusses Memoir in Cherry Hill on Nov. 3

The South Philadelphia native speaks at the Cherry Hill Public Library Monday night, Nov. 3, 7 p.m.

Philadelphia newsman and broadcaster, Dick Sheeran will discuss his memoir, “News Hound: From Halfball in South Philly to TV new” on Monday, Nov. 3 at the Cherry Hill Public Library, 7 p.m.

Sheeran, a South Philadelphia native, began his journalism career at the Philadelphia Daily News where he worked as a copy boy.

He transcended roles from reporter to rewrite to night city editor. In 1968, he joined KYW Newsradio in his first position in broadcast news.

Five years later he transferred to KYW-TV where he spent the next 30 years as a feature reporter covering stories on entertainment, fun and food.

Over the course of his time at KYW-TV, Sheeran covered news stories ranging from the Three Mile Island accident to the annual Mummer’s Day Parade.

His news coverage took him around the world as well. He traveled to Rome for the canonization of Bishop John Neumann, and to Monaco, for the funeral of Princess Grace Kelly.

Nationally, Sheeran frequented cities like New York, Kansas City and Washington D.C. to report on political conventions. His political coverage for KYW-TV even included a sit down discussion with President Jimmy Carter.

Sheeran retired from broadcast in 2003 and now teaches as an adjunct instructor at Temple University in the School of Communications.

Sheeran is a lifelong member of the broadcast union, the American Federation of Radio and Television Artists and has served on the local board for 20 years. He currently serves as second vice president.

In 2010, Sheeran was inducted into the Broadcast Pioneers Hall of Fame.
