Camden Catholic Advances 3 to State Wrestling Quarterfinals

Chad Walsh and Jeff and T.J. Miller all have a chance at an individual title.

Three Camden Catholic wrestlers remain in the hunt for an individual state title after the first night of wrestling action at the New Jersey Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA) tournament in Atlantic City Friday night.

T.J. Miller, Jeff Miller and Chad Walsh all moved on to the quarterfinals with early-round wins.

T.J. Miller had the easiest route into the quarters at 145 pounds—after a bye, he pinned Hackensack’s Amir George in just 22 seconds, and moves on to face Howell’s Ashanti Maurice in the quarterfinals.

Walsh scored a decision over Bergen Catholic’s Joe Grello, 6-1, at 152 pounds, and moves on to face John Hennelly, of Delsea.

At 285, Jeff Miller had to win a pair of matches, beating Marvin Hayden of Toms River South in overtime, 2-1, before scoring a 3-1 decision over Monroe’s Thomas Tehan to move to the quarters. He’ll face Anthony Tufaro, of Scotch Plains-Fanwood for a shot at the semis.

Two other Irish wrestlers still have a shot at placing—Mark McCormick and Tyler McBride both took first-round losses and fell into the wrestleback round.
