Camden Catholic Linebacker Jarred Alwan Signs with Temple

The senior will focus on defense in college after being a two-way player in high school.

Like plenty of other kids, Cherry Hill native Jarred Alwan always saw himself on the big stage as a Division I college football player.

The Camden Catholic senior and three-star recruit made that dream official Wednesday, signing as an early decision to Temple University.

While he’s split his time on offense and defense for the Irish, Alwan figures to be an outside linebacker for the Owls, and sees himself fitting in amid a team that’s building around second-year coach Steve Addazio, who replaced Al Golden in 2011.

“I fell in love with the coaches, and they fell in love with me,” Alwan said.

But equally important is Temple’s proximity to home, which gave the school the edge in his final decision. With home games at Lincoln Financial Field, it’s a 15-minute drive over the Walt Whitman Bridge for his family to come watch Alwan play, rather than hike across the state or the region.

Of course, he’d like to be able to give them a show on the field as soon as possible.

“I want to play as soon as I get in there,” Alwan said. “I’ll work hard for it and see what happens.”

The early signing comes just five months after Alwan verbally committed to Temple, and he said it was important to make the call now, so he can focus on the remainder of his senior year at Camden Catholic.

“I just wanted to get it out of the way,” he said.

Though he hopes to be a force in the defensive backfield, Alwan isn’t shying away from academics, either—he’s planning on being an actuarial science major at Temple.

Alwan was among a number of Irish players making an early decision to sign Wednesday. Along with him were:

T.J. Miller: University of Virginia, Wrestling
