Cherry Hill East High School Is 1 Of America's Best, US News Says

CHERRY HILL, NJ — Cherry Hill High School East is among the top 50 high schools in New Jersey and among the best in the nation, according to U.S. News & World Report's 2018 rankings of best high schools in the country.

Cherry Hill East is 45th in the state and No. 1,458 in the country in the 2018 best high school rankings that were released on Wednesday. The rankings evaluate over 20,500 public high schools. U.S. News identified schools that best serve all students and assessed how prepared students are for college-level work.

Schools are also recognized with gold, silver and bronze medals with gold indicating the greatest level of college readiness. Cherry Hill East was recognized with a silver medal.

“Students have the opportunity to take Advanced Placement coursework and exams,” U.S. News wrote about the school. “The AP participation rate at Cherry Hill High School East is 41 percent. The student body makeup is 51 percent male and 49 percent female, and the total minority enrollment is 36 percent.”

Eighty-eight percent of students who take the AP test pass. The school’s College Readiness Index is 37.5 percent, and its reading proficiency is 57 percent. Mathematics proficiency is at 49 percent. The school’s total enrollment is listed at 2,177 students, and the student to teacher ratio is 16:1. The graduation rate is 98 percent. To determine the rankings, U.S. News teamed up with the social science research firm RTI International. A variety of data sources, including the Common Core of Data, College Board and the International Baccalaureate, were used.

A four-step process was used to rank all eligible schools. The first two steps were to determine whether students were performing better than statistically expected in the state and whether minority were performing at or better than the state average for minority students, which was the second step. The third step required schools to meet or surpass a certain graduation benchmark and the final step was to determine college readiness. (You can read the full methodology here.)
