Cherry Hill East Owns Sports Rivalry On Opening Day

The Cougars upend cross-town rival Cherry Hill West in boys tennis and girls lacrosse.

In one of two opening-day rivalry games, Cherry Hill East's girls lacrosse team used an 11-goal second half to pull away from cross-town rival West in a season-opening victory.

Caitlin Delaney—who had three straight to give the Cougars a 6-3 halftime lead—and Megan Thompson led East with six goals each, while West got five goals from Lindsey Coyle.

Clearview 11, West 0

The Lions couldn’t find any offense in a season-opening loss to Clearview.

Cherokee 8, East 2

Cougars keeper Jessie Viggiano made 19 saves in the net, but Cherokee’s offense got clicking in the second quarter and didn’t stop. Ryan Anderson and Brandon Stern each had goals for East.

Baseball

Camden Catholic 5, East 1

The Irish scored out of the gate and took advantage of every hit and two East errors, scoring five runs on seven hits to beat the Cougars. Camden Catholic’s Colan Miller got the win on the mound, and Joe Craig had two doubles. East’s Mike Brambilla and Nick DellaVecchia both doubled, among six Cougars hits.

Cherokee 5, West 3

The Lions struck first, scoring three runs in the fifth, but Cherokee pushed across runs in the fifth and sixth innings to take the home victory. West’s Alex Wright was 2-for-3 with a walk, a run scored and a run batted in.

Softball

Eastern 11, West 4

The Lions jumped out to a 2-1 lead in the first, but seven errors cost the team in the end, as West dropped to 1-1 on the season with the loss.

Golf

East 170, Camden Catholic 193

Cherry Hill East rebounded from a season-opening tie with Cherry Hill West, shaving 22 strokes off Monday’s performance to beat Camden Catholic.

Boys tennis

East 4, West 1

The Cougars swept doubles and went 2-1 at singles, getting wins from Hank Davis and Dylan Fingerman, to beat West in the season opener for both teams. West’s Mike Genovese went three sets at second singles for the Lions’ only point.

Boys volleyball

East 2, Clearview 0

Cherry Hill East’s Nick DiVito racked up three aces and 14 kills to lead the Cougars to a victory over Clearview in the season opener Tuesday. Gary Hettinger added 10 kills, and Liam McIntyre registered 28 assists.
