Cherry Hill PBA Local 176 Attends the 2021 Tunnel to Towers 5K

On September 26, 2021 the Tunnel to Towers 5K Run and Walk took place in New York City, NY. The event honors the sacrifices of New York Fire Fighter Stephen Siller, the first responders and the United States Military. Many of us may have heard of the Tunnel to Towers Foundation but do not know the story behind the name.

On September 11, 2001, when the attacks took place on the Twin Towers, Stephen Stiller just finished his shift with Brooklyn’s Squad 1. He was supposed to meet with his brothers to play a round of golf and enjoy the day. While on his way to meet his brothers, he heard that the first plane struck the first tower. Stephen turned around and attempted to make it back to Squad 1 to respond to what would later be known as “Ground Zero”.

However, before making it back, the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel was closed to all traffic. City, State and US Officials tried to make sense of what was happening around the Country. Stephan, at age 34, gathered his 60 pounds of gear and walked over 3 miles from the closed Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel to the Towers, where he later paid the ultimate sacrifice.

The Cherry Hill PBA Local 176, Cherry Hill Police Department and family members registered 23 participants in the 2021 Tunnel to Towers 5K Run and Walk. This event, which marked the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, had over 30,000 total participants. The Tunnel to Towers Foundation has committed over $250,000,000 towards programs and has assisted over 500,000 visitors to the 9/11 mobile exhibit!
