CHERRY HILL, NJ — Four candidates filed to run for two Township Council seats up for election this year in Cherry Hill.

Monday afternoon marked the state deadline for candidates to file petitions to get on the ballot for the 2024 primary elections. One Democrat and one Republican are running for each seat, which would leave Cherry Hill with uncontested primaries.

The candidate field is not yet final, as the petitions must be fully certified. Over the coming days, petitions can be amended and New Jersey's deadline for objections is April 1. Independent candidates can also submit petitions for general-election candidacy by June 4, which is also the state's primary election day.

The township normally only holds council elections in odd-numbered years. But this year is an exception, since both council seats were held by officeholders who did not finish their terms.

One of those seats belonged to Dave Fleisher, who was elected mayor last November and resigned Jan. 2 to begin his mayorship. Fleisher made then-Council Member Brian Bauerle his chief of staff, which also left his term unfinished.

A few weeks later, the council appointed two people to fill the vacant seats. Daniel V. DiRenzo, Jr. took Bauerle's position on the council, while Jill Hulnick continued Fleisher's term.

Bauerle's term ran through 2027, while Fleisher's ran through 2025.

Per state regulations, the appointments of DiRenzo and Hulnick only run through the end of this year. In November, Cherry Hill voters will decide who finishes those council terms.

Currently, Democrats hold Cherry Hill's mayorship and all Township Council seats.
