Cherry Hill West Ousted in Quarterfinals of Diamond Classic

Cherry Hill, NJ -- The Cherry Hill High School West baseball team’s season has come to an end.

The Lions fell to Eastern Regional, 8-1, in the semifinals of the 43rd annual Joe Hartmann Diamond Classic on Saturday, according to nj.com.

Nick DeVetro’s triple plated Jake Azar in the third inning for the Lions’ only run of the game.

However, the Vikings rallied with five runs in the fourth inning for the win.

The third-seeded Lions were upset by 11th-seeded Washington Township in the quarterfinals of the NJSIAA South Jersey Group 4 playoffs on Thursday, according to nj.com.

Meanwhile, Eastern was set to face Lenape in the semifinals at 1 p.m. on Sunday, with the winner to play the winner of the game between Gloucester Catholic and Clearview in the final later in the day.

A total of 16 teams from what is traditionally considered the South Jersey area compete in the Diamond Classic, which is considered the unofficial championship tournament of South Jersey.

Ten teams qualify because they were in first place in their division at the cutoff date, and six other teams qualify as wild-card teams.

Cherry Hill West earned an at-large bid to the tournament.
