CHERRY HILL, NJ — The Cherry Hill Police Department has openings for two Special Law Enforcement Officers. Check below for the descriptions and information on how to apply for the Special Law Enforcement Officer Class 1 and Special Law Enforcement Officer Class 2 positions.
Special Law Enforcement Officer, Class 1:
Summary: The Township of Cherry Hill is currently accepting applications for the position of Class I Special Law Enforcement Officer. Candidates must possess SLEO certification or must successfully pass the SLEO I training course approved by the Police Training Commission. Retired police officers who separated from prior service in good standing, and with proper training who satisfy the other requirements of N.J.S.A. 40A:14-146, may apply. Preference will be given to a candidate who already possesses a current New Jersey Training Commission Certification as a Police Officer or a Class II or Class I Special Officer certification from an approved Police Academy.

Essential Duties: The Special Law Enforcement Officer Class I (SLEO Class I) is a part time member of the Cherry Hill Police Department. The SLEO Class I may be assigned for not more than twenty (20) hours per week to provide public safety and law enforcement services to a public entity. The use of firearm by an officer of this class shall be strictly prohibited and no Class I officer shall be assigned any duties which may required the carrying or use of a firearm.
Qualifications:
- A high school diploma or GED equivalent is required
- Be at least 18 years of age
- Be a United States Citizen
- Be a resident of New Jersey
- Hold a valid New Jersey driver’s license
- Be sound in body and of good health and be able to perform the physical functions of the duties assigned
- Have and demonstrate good moral character and have not been convicted of any crime constituting an indictable offense or any offense involving moral turpitude; verified by a background investigation
- Successfully pass an oral interview, psychological examination, medical examination and drug screening
- Meet all qualifications of N.J.S.A. 40A:14-146 et seq.

Special Law Enforcement Officer, Class 2:
Summary: The Township of Cherry Hill is currently accepting applications for the position of Class II Special Law Enforcement Officer. Preference will be given to candidates who possess a current New Jersey Training Commission Certification as a Police Officer or a Class II Special Officer certification from an approved Police Academy. Applicants may be required to submit to a Physical Fitness Test, Formal Interviews, Drug Testing and an extensive background investigation prior to any offers of employment. All applicants must be a resident of the State of New Jersey and possess a valid New Jersey driver’s license during the term of their appointment.
Essential Duties: The Special Law Enforcement Officer Class II (SLEO Class II) is a part time member of the Police Department. The SLEO Class II may be assigned for not more than twenty (20) hours per week to provide public safety and law enforcement services to a public entity. Special Law Enforcement Officers maintain order at public gatherings by using crowd control techniques. They may regulate and control pedestrian and vehicular traffic to assure safe and rapid traffic movement. Officers of this class shall be authorized to exercise full powers and duties similar to those of a permanent, regularly appointed full-time police officer. The use of a firearm by an officer of this class may be authorized only after the officer has been fully certified as successfully completing training as prescribed by the Police Training Commission.
Qualifications:
- A high school diploma or GED equivalent is required; one to two years of relevant experience a plus; or any equivalent combination of education and experience
- Prior experience and/or Police Training Commission firearm certification preferred
- Be a United States Citizen
- Be a resident of New Jersey
- Hold a valid New Jersey driver’s license
- Have the ability to read, write and speak the English language clearly and intelligently
- Have and demonstrate good moral character and have not been convicted of any crime constituting an indictable offense or any offense involving moral turpitude; verified by a background investigation
- Pass an oral interview
- Pass a psychological examination
- Pass a drug test
- Pass a medical screening
- Meet all qualifications of N.J.S.A. 40A:14-146 et seq.
