NYPD Cop Shot Man During Road Rage Incident In Camden Co.: Prosecutor

The suspect, who used his department-issued firearm, has been charged with attempted murder, authorities said.

VOORHEES, NJ — An NYPD officer has been charged after shooting another man during an apparent road-rage incident in Camden County, authorities said.

Hieu Tran shot the victim with his department-issued gun last month in Voorhees, according to the Camden County Prosecutor's Office (CCPO). An ambulance took the victim to Cooper University Hospital in Camden, where he remains in treatment.

The victim is in critical and unstable condition, according to the affidavit into Tran's arrest filed on Thursday.

Tran, 27, was charged Thursday with first-degree attempted murder, second-degree aggravated assault and second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. The NYPD arrested him that day in New York.

The NYPD suspended Tran without pay, a department spokesperson told Patch.

Voorhees police responded to a crash just before 11:15 p.m. May 17 at the intersection of Route 73 and Cooper Road. Arriving officers found one of the drivers suffering from a gunshot wound at the scene, the CCPO said.

Tran — a Yonkers, New York, resident — was identified as the shooter through surveillance footage, cell phone records and ballistics, authorities said.

Surveillance footage showed that that the victim's truck had stopped at the intersection. A white SUV — later identified as Tran's vehicle — then pulled up to the intersection, according to the affidavit that Patch obtained.

The victim then moved his truck directly next to Tran's SUV, the affidavit says. Moments later, the victim accelerated his truck through the red light and hit several vehicles, resulting in "serious" injury, according to the document. The white SUV then accelerated through the red light and fled the scene.

It's unclear when Tran fired his weapon during that sequence. A CCPO spokesperson declined further comment on the case.

At the scene, police found a yellow truck — later identified as the victim's vehicle — with bullet strikes on it, according to the affidavit. The victim was nearby, suffering from an apparent gunshot wounds.

Officers found three 9mm casings at the scene. Detectives obtained Tran's service weapon on Thursday and matched the casings with the firearm, the affidavit says.

Tran has waived extradition and will be brought to Camden County, CCPO Sgt. Andrew McNeil told Patch. After extradition, a detention hearing will take place on a date to be determined.

Tran has been an NYPD officer since early 2021. Last year, he earned a base salary of $53,600 and received nearly $11,000 in paid overtime, according to public records.
