New Route 70 Lane Shifts For NJDOT Project Coming To Cherry Hill

CHERRY HILL, NJ — Route 70 in Cherry Hill will temporarily have some new traffic patterns as the state's longterm road construction progresses.

The changes will impact Route 70 travel between Interstate 295 and Kings Highway in late June. Here's what to expect, according to the NJ Department of Transportation (NJDOT):

• June 21-23: From the night of Friday, June 21, through the early morning on Sunday, June 23, the eastbound lanes of Route 70 between Kings Highway and I-295 that are currently under construction will shift back to normal traffic lanes.
• Week of June 24: Barriers will move to the median area, accommodating the lane shift and upcoming lane shifts for the westbound direction. During that week, all traffic will travel in the original lanes.
• June 28-30: Westbound traffic between Kings Highway and I-295 will shift to the center island area from the night of Friday, June 28, through Sunday, June 30. The lane shift will accommodate the next phase of road construction.

The state-funded Route 70 project has had major impacts on travel in Cherry Hill. Throughout the project, residents and business owners have expressed frustration over the shifting road closures and detours on one the the township's major corridors.

Earlier this year, Mayor Dave Fleisher claimed that NJDOT wasn't adequately communicating project updates to the community — especially with forthcoming shifts in traffic patterns. An NJDOT spokesperson told Patch that the agency provides adequate notice through several communication methods.

Fleisher expressed hope for improved communication after Cherry Hill officials met with NJDOT in February.

During the $153 million project, NJDOT will reconstruct nearly 9 miles of Route 70 between Route 38 in Pennsauken and Cooper Avenue in Evesham. Much of the impacted roadway runs through the heart of Cherry Hill.

NJDOT expects construction to last until early 2027.
