West's Mohrfeld, East's Goto, 5 Other Wrestlers Get to Region Quarters

It was a good night for local wrestlers at the Region 7 wrestling tournament.

It was a strong opening night for local athletes at the Region 7 wrestling tournament, as seven out of 10 participants from Cherry Hill schools moved on to the next round of action at Robbinsville High School. Wrestlers from Camden Catholic went 3-1; Cherry Hill East went 3-1; and Cherry Hill West went 1-1 on the night.

The seven winners join all of the district winners in Friday’s quarterfinals. Each of the district winners received a first-round bye.

  • West’s Nick Mohrfeld scored a 5-1 decision over Camden Catholic’s Joseph Cahil at 106.
  • Camden Catholic’s Mark McCormick pinned Matt Lynch, of Burlington City, in 3:38 at 126.
  • Alex Smyth, of Camden Catholic, scored a 6-2 decision over Allentown’s Jack Giglia at 132.
  • The Cougars’ Patrick Swenson advanced to the next round with a 4-0 win over Riverside’s Kenny Swartz at 145.
  • Camden Catholic’s Frank Varallo made his way to the next round with a first round pin of Dante Morris, of BCIT, at 170.
  • Daishi Goto, of East, outscored Palmyra’s Cody Wallace, 13-8, at 182.
  • East’s Jerry Peralta pinned Collingswood’s Pat Miles in 3:55 to move on at 195.
  • West’s David Capone could not do the same, falling to Mark Alberto, of Paul VI, by pin.
  • The Cougars’ Quinn Sanchez was pinned by Camden's Andrew Stevens in 4:16 at 285.

Action resumes Friday night with the quarterfinals and concludes on Saturday.
