82-Year-Old Man Falls Victim to Internet Scam: Police

The man was locked out of his computer when he gave remote access to someone claiming to be from Microsoft.

An 82-year-old man was targeted by an Internet scammer in Burlington County recently, but was able to avoid giving the scammer any money.

The man reported receiving a phone call from a person who said they were a technician from Microsoft on April 5, according to Mount Laurel Police.

The person offered to run a free virus scan in exchange for remote access to the computer. However, once the man gave the caller access, the caller was able to lock him out.

He then told the victim he would only restore access if the man paid $300. When the man refused, he lowered the demand to $149.

The victim refused again before taking his computer to a service center and having it unlocked.
