HADDONFIELD, NJ — A Haddonfield Memorial High School staff member on Friday unintentionally caused what authorities were calling an "accidental lockdown."

"A lockdown alarm was accidentally triggered Friday morning [and] ... all parents in our district were notified immediately," Polly Mitchell, the school district's communications specialist told Patch. "The entire episode concluded in 11 minutes."

Such lockdown alarms can be activated in one of two ways, she continued.

One way this happens is when someone triggers one of the district's wall-mounted alarms that resemble a fire-alarm box, according to Mitchell. The second way this happens is when a button on a pendant that teachers, secretaries and staff members wear around their necks is pushed, according to Mitchell.

"On Friday, someone (a staff person) touched his/her pendant by mistake," she said.
