BURLINGTON COUNTY, NJ — The Burlington County Prosecutor's Office filed a civil complaint to have a town councilman and former Mayor of Willingboro removed from office.
The move calls on the New Jersey Superior Court to disqualify Nathaniel Anderson from his ability to serve after he was convicted of federal crimes in January.
Anderson was charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud affecting a financial institution, bank fraud, and two counts of making a false statement on a mortgage application.
During the two year period from March 2015 to June 2017, Anderson and his business partner, Chrisone Anderson, conspired and agreed to coordinate a fraudulent short sale of a property in Willingboro.
Public officials are required to be removed from office if they are convicted of "crimes involving dishonest conduct or meet other legally defined criteria for forfeiture" in New Jersey.
Anderson was convicted on a federal level, so his removal was not addressed after the guilty verdict was read.
Under statute, a county prosecutor, however, can apply in New Jersey Superior Court for someone to forfeit their office if they refuse to give up their position.
Anderson was re-elected to a four-year term on council in November 2025, convicted in January, and was sentenced in June to 12 months and one day in prison.
He and his co-defendant are also required to pay $221,862 in restitutions to the victim.
Anderson is currently being held at the Federal Correctional Institution at Fort Dix.
