Bookkeeper Stole $109K From South Jersey Company: Prosecutor

An employee in the billing department of a hardware supply company in Burlington County has been indicted on charges of stealing nearly $109,000 from the company over a 13-month period, Burlington County Prosecutor Scott Coffina announced this week. Cortney R. Brucee, 32, of Burlington Township, was indicted on one count each of second-degree elements of computer theft, second-degree misapplication of entrusted property and second-degree theft by deception.

In total, Brucee is accused of stealing $108,927.90 from the Hainesport-based company between February of 2016 and March of 2017. Brucee’s position required her to take payments from customers and deposit the money in the company’s bank account. Instead, Brucee deposited multiple checks meant for her employer into her personal account at a different bank, Coffina said. She then used that money to pay for various personal expenses, including a family vacation to Walt Disney World in Florida.

The investigation began after the general manager called a customer to find out why an invoice had not yet been paid and the customer said they did pay it. The customer provided a copy of the check that had been signed by Brucee showing that the invoice was paid, Coffina said. The check was signed for deposit into Brucee’s personal account.

Anyone with knowledge of criminal activity involving this defendant is asked to call the Prosecutor’s Office at 609-265-5035 and ask to speak to a detective in the Financial Crimes Unit.
