The fire was contained to one apartment, and no other injuries were reported, authorities said.

BURLINGTON TOWNSHIP, NJ — A mother and son were killed in a fire that broke out early Thursday morning in a Burlington Township apartment complex, authorities said.

Officials responded at about 3 a.m. to the blaze at the Northgate Village Apartments on Northgate Village Road, police said. Sandra Stevenson, 62, and Eric Stevenson, 28, died at the scene.

Arriving officers found heavy smoke coming out of a window and tried to force entry into the apartment. Because of the heavy smoke condition, Burlington Township police weren't able to gain entry until the fire department arrived and the blaze was partially under control.
