Burlington County Man Arrested in Fatal Shooting in Mercer County

The man was arrested while he was at a motel in Pennsylvania Monday afternoon.

A Burlington County man has been arrested and charged in connection with the April 8 shooting death of 52-year-old Elliot Simon, Acting Mercer County Prosecutor Angelo J. Onofri and Trenton Police Director Ernest Parrey Jr. said on Tuesday.

The U.S. Marshals NY/NJ Regional Fugitive Task Force found 26-year-old Virgil Howard, of Willingboro, in a motel room in Bristol, Pa., and arrested him Monday afternoon.

Howard is charged with murder, felony murder, robbery, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, unlawful possession of a weapon and certain persons not to possess a firearm.

Bail was set at $1 million cash only.

Trenton Police found Simon suffering from a gunshot wound to his chest when they responded to the area of 37-49 North Hermitage Avenue after the ShotSpotter system detected gunshots around 9:08 p.m. on April 8.

He was transported to Capital Health Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

The charges are a result of an investigation by Detective Eric Hastings and the Mercer County Homicide Task Force, police said.
