Cinnaminson Man Joins Burlington County College Board of Trustees

A Cinnaminson man will serve as Burlington County College’s 2014-2015 alumni trustee, the college announced on Wednesday.

Joseph Hyland, 25, was selected by students who graduated in the class of 2014.

Hyland will serve a one-year term in a nonvoting capacity. He graduated last spring with an associate of science degree in liberal arts and sciences. This fall, he will study psychology at Montclair State University.

“Burlington County College has been one of the best experiences of my life and has given me the education and confidence to pursue a bachelor’s degree,” Hyland said. “I’m excited about this opportunity to continue to serve my alma mater, represent my classmates and learn more about this wonderful institution.”

Hyland was sworn in along with the board’s two newest members, Kevin Brown and Kate Gibbs, on Tuesday.

“The Burlington County Board of Chosen Freeholders values education and the stewardship of Burlington County College is in the very best of hands,” Freeholder Director Bruce Garganio said. “Mr. Brown and Ms. Gibbs are exceptionally qualified to join a dynamic board that produces tremendous results for students in Burlington County. I particularly look forward to the benefit of their experience and input as we continue to work closely with Burlington County College to advance our new and innovative Workforce Development Initiative, aimed at making it easier for job seekers to find good well-paying jobs.”

Brown, of Woodland Township, is council representative for the Northeast Regional Council of Carpenters, has served on the Woodland Township School Board and currently sits on the Burlington County Planning Board.

“Education, whether traditional academics or career training, is very important for the future of our residents and the entire county,” Brown said. “I’m humbled by this opportunity and look forward to contributing my experiences to benefit Burlington County College, and most importantly, its students.”

Gibbs, of Maple Shade, directs business development for the Engineers Labor-Employer Cooperative 825. She previously served as executive director of the Burlington County Republican Committee. She recently earned an MBA in business administration from Drexel University’s LeBow College of Business with Summa Cum Laude distinction.

“This is a tremendous opportunity to help people achieve success through high-quality education at Burlington County College,” Gibbs said. “Joining a board dedicated to such an important mission is an honor and responsibility that I will work very hard to fulfill.”

The appointments of Gibbs and Brown bring the board to full capacity, filling vacancies created by former Trustees Joseph R. Malone III and Maria Rodriguez-Gregg’s elections to public office.

“Trustees Brown and Gibbs give our board an even greater ability to serve the students and communities that make Burlington County College such a wonderful institution,” Board Chair George Nyikita said. “I welcome them to the privilege and responsibility that comes with serving as a trustee and encourage them to share their expertise and talents to help us meet the college’s challenges.”

Interim President Dr. David Spang noted the educational and career-training background of Brown and Gibbs.

“Their background and expertise blend very well into the college’s tradition of academic excellence and workforce development,” Spang said. “I look forward to working with Trustees Brown and Gibbs, and the new perspective they bring, on ways to keep the college moving forward to help students succeed.”
