Cinnaminson Resident Helps Union Advance in U.S. Open Cup Soccer Tournament
John McCarthy made five saves in goal in the Union's win over D.C. United.

Cinnaminson resident John McCarthy has the Philadelphia Union playing in the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open Cup soccer tournament.
McCarthy had five saves to help lead the Union to a 2-1 win over D.C. United in the fifth round of the tournament Tuesday night, according to mlssoccer.com.
The Union will face Red Bull New York, a 4-1 winner over the New York Cosmos, in the quarterfinals on July 21 or 22.

Philadelphia fell behind early when Jairo Arrieta scored for D.C. United in the 27th minute. The Union scored two goals in the second half, including the game-winner from Fabinho in the 79th minute. Eric Ayuk Mbu previously put the Union on the board, in the 55th minute.
McCarthy also played goal in the Union’s fourth round win over the Rochester Rhinos.

The U.S. Open Cup is a tournament open to all affiliated amateur and professional teams in the country. The Union advanced to last year’s final before falling to Seattle.
There were a total of 91 teams in this year’s tournament. There are 17 Major League Soccer (MLS) teams in the tournament, including the Union. The MLS teams began play in the fourth round on Tuesday. The fourth round concludes Wednesday.
