MOUNT HOLLY, NJ — A former corrections officer smuggled drugs to an inmate in exchange for money at the Burlington County Jail, officials said Wednesday.

Abraham Olmedia supplied the individual with weed and tobacco, receiving payment from one of the inmate's relatives in return, according to the Burlington County Prosecutor's Office (BCPO).

Earlier this year, another corrections officer detected the odor of burnt tobacco coming from a cell, authorities said. The investigation revealed that Olmedia provided the inmate in that cell with drugs on multiple occasions, the BCPO said.

Olmedia, 27, of Burlington Township, resigned after the investigation began. He worked at the jail for just over two years.

The former jail employee was charged with official misconduct (second-degree), conspiracy to commit official misconduct (second-degree) and providing contraband to an inmate (disorderly persons offense).

Olmedia was taken into custody Wednesday afternoon at the Burlington County Courthouse and was released after processing. An appearance in Superior Court is scheduled for next month, and officials plan to present the case to a grand jury for possible indictment.

The BCPO's Special Investigations Unit and the jail's Internal Affairs Unit conducted the investigation.
