Former Cinnaminson Clergyman Accused Of Sex Abuse In Disclosure

Gregory D. Vaughan was among 100 new names released by a law firm that says the Catholic Church needs to do more about sex abuse.

CINNAMINSON, NJ - A clergyman who served in Cinnaminson in the late 1980s and early 90s was one of an additional 100 priests and members of the clergy who were named in a new disclosure this week.

Monsignor Gregory D. Vaughan, who served at St. Charles Borromeo Church from 1987-92, was named by attorneys who believe the state's Catholic dioceses need to be more forthcoming about what they know.

Vaughan’s alleged abuse is said to have taken place while he was a parochial vicar at St. Ann Parish in Keansburg, according to New Jersey 101.5. The alleged abuse was reported in March, and Vaughan was immediately removed from his role as pastor at St. Catharine Parish in Holmdel. He was not charged because the allegations came after the statute of limitations expired.

Vaughan also served at St. Mary Church in New Monmouth from 1993-97, and at St. Raphael Church in Trenton from 1998-2001.

The law firms of Jeff Anderson & Associates released a report containing the names and histories of more than 300 people accused of sexual misconduct in the Archdiocese of Newark, Diocese of Camden, Diocese of Metuchen, Diocese of Paterson and Diocese of Trenton.

Patch identified only those who were formally accused by law enforcement, Jesuits or the Catholic church of sexual abuse. Patch is also only listing names not previously disclosed.

Nearly 200 names on the new clergy list were already named by the Catholic church earlier this year. The new disclosure contains more than 100 names of people that were not previously released. Vaughan’s name was not previously released by the church.

Anderson also announced the filing of a lawsuit by a sexual abuse survivor against all the New Jersey Catholic bishops and the New Jersey Catholic Conference for "maintaining a public hazard by keeping secret the names of all clergy accused of sexual misconduct in New Jersey."

He also demanded that all five New Jersey bishops release the identities, background information and histories on all clergy accused of sexual misconduct with minors, "which has largely been concealed."

The Archdiocese of Newark said it will continue to focus on "transparency and accountability" and reinforcing established reporting and prevention policies and programs to protect minors and support victims in our parishes, schools and ministries.

The archiocese said it is engaging in "full and proactive collaboration with state and local law enforcement officials and with the Attorney General's office continues," according to the statement.
