Former Postal Supervisor From Delran Admits To Nearly $16K In Embezzlement: Authorities

Amar Patel faces 10 years in prison following his guilty plea.

A former U.S. Postal Service supervisor from Delran has admitted to stealing money from the postal service, Acting U.S. Attorney William E. Fitzpatrick announced on Tuesday. Amar D. Patel, 36, pleaded guilty to an information charging him with one count of embezzling, stealing, purloining, and knowingly converting to his own use USPS funds in excess of $1,000.

Patel was the supervisor at post offices in Delran, Delanco and Riverside, according to documents filed in the case and statements made in court. In July of last year, the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General started investigating shortages in cash deposits at all three post offices.

During the investigation, Patel was caught on hidden surveillance camera stealing money from a sealed deposit bank at the Riverside location, authorities said. According to U.S. Postal Service financial records and bank deposit records, the Riverside office’s deposit was short $1,650 that day.

In all, Patel admitted to stealing $15,700 in U.S. Postal Service funds on 12 separate occasions from Feb. 20, 2016, through Jan. 14, 2017, Fitzpatrick said.

Patel faces 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Sentencing is scheduled for Jan. 26, 2018.
