Hathaway's Owner: Sweet Water Bar & Grill Will be 'Breathtaking'

Construction started earlier this week on the new restaurant and bar.

Ground broke this week on Sweet Water, the new bar and restaurant owner George Kyrtatas and his family is building. But, it’s not just an extension of the current Cinnaminson diner. According to Kyrtatas, it’s a whole new experience.

“It’s going to be the ,” Kyrtatas said while watching workers earlier this week.

United Diner Construction, the workers behind Adelphia in Deptford and Phily Diner in Runnemede, started work March 26 and are slated to finish in September. This fall, Sweet Water Bar & Grill will boast outdoor seating, indoor balcony seating and a menu that’s “American cuisine with some Mediterranean influences” said Kyrtatas, also known as the "Little Greek Chef."

And the bar will be fully loaded, said Kyrtatas.

The desire to open a resturant like this has been on the family’s mind for a long time. Hathaway’s has been open since 1986 and recently, Kyrtatas said the dinner business hasn’t been as busy as it once had been.

“People are just not going to the diners for dinner anymore,” he said.

The landscaping and walkway at the bar entrance to the diner has been completely stripped away to make way for the main entrance to Sweetwater. An outside walkway will take you up to an outdoor patio. And some of the current dining room will be redone for seating at Sweetwater.

“Imagine all mahogany wood,” Kyrtatas said. "It's going to be breathtaking."

The family deigned everything he said, from the color schemes to the landscaping.

Once open Kyrtatas, who spends most of his time in the kitchen now, will run Sweetwater while his brother, John, will mostly be up front at the diner.

Kyrtatas said customers have been asking a lot of questions, thinking the diner is just adding on.

“We’re doing so much more than that,” he said. “We are encouraging customers to come in, ask questions. We’ll walk them around. I want people to see it. I want them to know what is going on.”

No changes to Hathaway’s are taking place while construction is going on. And, only one parking spot was eliminated because of the new entrance being built.

Kyrtatas is having fun with the menu too during the building. There are “Construction specials” on the menu.

“This is going to be a destination,” he said. “This is going to be the place where all the surrounding areas will go to. It’s going to be here.”
