~~~ MY STORY ~~~
FEBRUARY 2016: I hired a long time local contractor to build a 2 car garage adjacent to my home:
Deal Direct LLC
Raymond Neild [owner]
511 Wayne Drive
Cinnaminson, NJ
Ray lives [literally] 1000’ from me. His son Keith was and presumably still is the sole full time employee. I previously hired him in 2014 to replace the siding and roofing on my home. We became friends over the course of both projects until I realized the garage was never going to be finished! We shared personal stories over a donut or beer, depending upon the time of day. I had even offered my help to get supplies for him for ANY of his local jobs if he got into a bind.
JUNE 2016: The project was dragging, 3 full months since groundbreaking and Ray needed funds. I viewed Ray as a friend and neighbor more than a contractor so I offered him my $7,500 final payment. I recall his words: "But your job is not done...." and I recall my response: "Well, we're friends and neighbors, it's not like you’re going to screw me". THAT WAS THE LAST I SAW OF HIM. I texted, emailed, called - all ignored with a few “no shows” thrown in. Fast forward to:
FEBRUARY 2017: I sent Ray a letter requesting credit for the unfinished work so I could hire an honest contractor to complete what I could not. No response, so I filed a legal complaint which he did not respond to and 3 months later I was awarded Default Judgement [BUR-DC-002155-17].
IN THE BEGINNING
Ironically, only $500 of my $5,000 initial check was withdrawn from my account. Had Ray received all $5,000? I asked and he was credited only $500! “Thanks, I wouldn’t have caught that” he said. In hindsight perhaps I should have…?!!!
IN THE END
My plan was to take a photo of Ray & I shaking hands in front of garage and mount on the left over section of the custom beam shown below that was used to build the garage:
