Joint Base Being Assessed for Possible Chemical Contamination
The Department of Defense is investigating the negative effects of two chemicals used in a firefighting foam in training and emergencies.

Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst is one of hundreds of military bases across the country being assessed as the Department of Defense attempts to determine the possible dangers of using a firefighting foam used out to put out fuel fires, the Burlington County Times reports.
The foam is used during training exercises and emergencies, and two chemical byproducts used to make the foam are under fire.
Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) has been linked to bladder cancer and thyroid disease, and Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) has been linked to kidney cancer, testicular cancer, ulcerartive colitis and thyroid disease, among other diseases, according to the report.
